Year Last Seen:

1940

Comments:

This species was known from Hawaii's Big Island, USA, but it has not been reported since 1940 and is now Extinct. Deforestation and introduced diseases are likely to have been responsible.

It inhabited mountain koa-ohia forest (500-2,000 m).

Causes:

Its extinction was probably because of deforestation and introduced disease-carrying mosquitoes which are prevalent in the lowlands (Collar et al. 1994).

Distribution:

Akialoa obscura was endemic to Hawai`i, USA. It was apparently not uncommon until 1895, but declined rapidly, with the last report being in 1940 (Greenway 1967).
