Posted on 31 December, 1784 in Extinct

Year Last Seen:

1784

Comments:

This species was known from Tahiti, but presumably went Extinct soon after it was last described in 1784. Introduced predators are likely to have been responsible.

Habitat:

Nothing is known.

Causes:

Introduced predators are likely to have led to its demise.

Distribution:

Zapornia nigra is known from two illustrations, one by Georg Forster from Tahiti, French Polynesia, from James Cook's second voyage (1772-1775), and the other by John Frederick Miller from 1784, and by subsequent descriptions by John Latham and Johann Friedrich Gmelin. It presumably became extinct soon after (Walters 1988). The species also possibly occurred on Mangaia (Hume 2017).
